Tacoma’s water worries

Tacoma Water, by the end of the year, will recommend the installation of water treatment equipment and storage that could raise rates by as much as 20 percent over three or four years beginning in 2011.
<p/>This affects 160,000 residential customers in Tacoma, University Place and other parts of Pierce County, as well as businesses and cities on Tacoma&rsquo;s system.</p>

Yankees bedevil Mariners, again

Man who swam to Suu Kyi's handed over in Myanmar

A U.S. man sentenced to seven years in jail for sneaking into the home of detained Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was handed over to an American consular official on Sunday to be flown out of the country.<p/>A U.S. Embassy car retrieved John Yettaw from the prison where he has been held since early May after he was arrested while swimming away from Suu Kyi's house.

Beckham red-carded in loss to Sounders

David Beckham was ejected for a studs-up challenge in the 17th minute, and the Los Angeles Galaxy finished with nine men in a 2-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday night.<p/>Beckham slid into Sounders midfielder Peter Vagenas trying to reach a ball, hooking his right ankle and bringing the former Galaxy midfielder down to the pitch. Referee Ricardo Salazar immediately issued the red card, and Beckham did not offer much of an argument before leaving the field.

LaDainian Tomlinson got his wish - a handful of carries in August.<p/>The San Diego Chargers' star running back played in an exhibition game for the first time since 2005, carrying four times for 10 yards and catching one pass from Philip Rivers for 8 yards in the Chargers' 20-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday night.

B-17 visits Bellingham museum

A piece of American aviation history was on display at the Heritage Flight Museum in Bellingham Saturday, Aug. 15 - a fully restored B-17 airplane.<p/> The airplane, owned and flown by the Commemorative Air Force, spends winters in Mesa, Ariz., and tours 60 cities throughout the United States during the summer, said Robert Morril, a loadmaster with the Commemorative Air Force.

Tacoma plan would end free parking downtown

Free street parking in downtown Tacoma could begin disappearing as early as April to be replaced by paid parking kiosks, under a tentative plan introduced to the City Council this week.
<p/>As part of a larger discussion to kick-start a long-term citywide transportation strategy, City Manager Eric Anderson proposed moving forward with a plan to buy dozens of parking pay stations &ndash; the electronic kiosks that spit out paid receipts to attach to car windows &ndash; that would be installed &ldquo;incrementally, based on marked demand&rdquo; in downtown. </p>

US senator meets Myanmar's democracy leader

U.S. Senator Jim Webb met with Myanmar's democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi on Saturday, the first foreign official allowed to see her since she was sentenced to 18 months of detention by the ruling junta, witnesses said.<p/>The 64-year-old Nobel Peace laureate was driven from her residence to a nearby government guest house for a 40-minute meeting with Webb after which reporters saw her taken back to her home by car.

&lsquo;Clunkers&rsquo; scarce on lots

It sounds like such a good deal.
<p/>Devise a program that takes gas-guzzling older cars and trucks off the road while simultaneously stimulating sales of new cars. Give federally supported inflated credits for trade-ins. Spend $1 billion, or $3 billion, and Greater Detroit will live again.</p>
