The Battle of Saratoga: Aug. 17

The action at NYRA has shifted upstate, meaning it’s once again time for the Daily News’ one-of-a-kind horse race, the Battle of Saratoga. This year, Dave Little and defending champ Jerry Bossert welcome the new guy, Dan Lauletta.

Harper: Omar listens to doc’s orders

Let’s face it, if the Mets hadn’t figured out that David Wright should at least go on the 15-day disabled list, as he sat at home Sunday with “post-concussion symptoms,” all hope for this franchise would have been lost.

Yang dream: Y.E.S. he can

After the last putt fell, after Y.E. Yang raised his arms in celebration, after the shock hit the grandstands of Hazeltine National Golf Club that Tiger Woods had lost, the 37-year-old South Korean looked for his wife, Young Ju.

Lupica: Woods’ loss upset for ages

Fourteen times Tiger Woods had led, or held a share of the lead, going into the last round of a major. All 14 times he had won. Until Y.E. Yang did to Woods what Woods has done to a lot of Y.E. Yangs in his splendid career. | Photos: Tiger collapses

Another meltdown haunts Harrington

For the second straight week, Padraig Harrington played himself out of contention with a disaster hole.

Roy Jones Jr. scores TKO victory over Lacy

Roy Jones Jr. toyed with Jeff Lacy for the first four rounds and then punished him for six more before Lacy’s corner mercifully stopped the bout after the 10th round Saturday night. Jones scored a TKO victory.

Yankees hold on to beat Mariners 5-2 in Seattle

Another series, another win. Such is life these days for the Yankees. Sergio Mitre had his best outing of the year, giving up one earned run over 5-1/3 innings to help pitch the Bombers to a 5-2 win over the Mariners Saturday night.

Bondy: Sitting Wright would be a heads-up move

Nothing good comes from Met games these days. Events scheduled to elicit childhood memories bring only fresh injury or recrimination. If the Wilpons could just shut down the season right now at Citi Field, the Mets would be better off.

Lupica: Football is tail that wags the dog

The Eagles signing Michael Vick was bad news for hostile animal groups and perhaps much worse news for the NFC East. I have no idea whether Vick has come out of this a better and more decent and more enlightened person.

Woods is still in front at PGA Championship

The runaway didn’t happen, but neither did Tiger Woods lose his grip on the PGA Championship. His lead cut in half from four shots to two after a 1-under par 71, he still has one of the most impressive records in sports to fall back on.
