The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday handed the city of Columbus an important victory in a high-stakes lawsuit against online travel companies. The 4-3 ruling sets a precedent for other cases, including one brought by the city of Atlanta. Both cities contend Internet reservation companies are not paying their full share of hotel occupancy taxes. “It’s the highest court in any state that has interpreted the online companies’ business model and determined they have to pay the taxes they are withholding from the taxing authority,” said C. Neal Pope, a lawyer representing Columbus and Atlanta. “It’s a tremendous decision.”

The Gwinnett Braves lost to Columbus on Tuesday, 6-5 in 11 innings, as the winning run scored on a passed ball by catcher Clint Sammons. Gwinnett took a 5-3 lead into the ninth, but Columbus’ Michael Aubrey drove home two runs with a two-out, bases-loaded single. Jo-Jo Reyes started for the G-Braves but faced one batter before leaving with an injury. He re-injured his hamstring covering first.

Michael Brantley had four of Columbus’ 17 hits, and the Clippers defeated the Gwinnett Braves 12-0 on Saturday in Lawrenceville. The G-Braves had scored at least nine runs a game in a three-game winning streak, but had only five hits and committed five errors Saturday. Columbus scored five runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth. Former Atlanta Brave Tony Graffanino had two hits. G-Braves pitcher Jerome Gamble allowed seven earned runs in 1 1/2 innings.

Columbus is hearing cash registers sing with the news that NCR will bring a manufacturing plant and 870 jobs to the mostly military and industrial city. “We have a lot of growth here in Columbus,” said Chris McCoy, general manager of Peachtree Mall in Columbus. “We’re excited about this move.” NCR, maker of cash registers, self-checkouts, ATMs and airline check-in kiosks, announced Tuesday it will move its headquarters from Ohio to Duluth, and open a new ATM plant in Columbus.
