BOSTON, Aug. 13 (UPI) — Detroit’s Justin Verlander hurled eight scoreless innings Thursday en route to a 2-0 Tigers victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Justin Verlander allowed four hits in eight innings, and Ryan Raburn homered for Detroit on Thursday to lead the Tigers to a 2-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox and avert a four-game sweep.

Eight to one. That's the lead the Red Sox have over the Tigers in home runs hit over the Green Monster.

BOSTON, Aug. 12 (UPI) — Josh Beckett allowed two runs over seven innings Wednesday and became the first 14-game winner in the majors this year while carrying Boston past Detroit 8-2.

The Detroit Film Theatre, the popular art film series at the Detroit Institute of Arts, will kick off its fall season Sept. 11-13 with a weekend of Alloy Orchestra performances.

The exodus out of Detroit is staggering. At its peak, the city was home to 2 million. Today, the population is less than 900,000 and dropping. But a hearty group of artists, risk-takers and city explorers has launched an urban renaissance.

Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello was ejected from Tuesday night's game after he hit Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis in the second inning. Porcello was not hurt in the ensuing scuffle.

About 200 people — including Detroit musicians Amp Fiddler, Phat Kat and his Slum Village mate T3 — gathered in the church for the two-hour service.

Mike Lowell, who replaced Kevin Youkilis — ejected in his role in a benches-clearing brawl — hit two home runs and had three RBIs as the Red Sox beat the Tigers, 7-5, tonight in Boston.
